“What’s your resolution?” Has anyone asked that question yet? The first of January offeres a calendar reset, a marker in our journey that allows us to reflect on the past twelve months and look ahead to the next twelve. Its a time that allows us to reflect on what went well, what didn’t and what we want to change.
In the annual self-assessment I have discerened that my word for the year is “stronger.” I want to be stronger in all that I do. A stronger husband. A stronger father. A stronger body (exercise). And a stronger grasp upon God’s word.
Lucky for me, Time to Revive is starting reviveSCHOOL. It is a 24-month study through the entire Bible with a daily reading plan, daily video, questions and organized discussion groups. Each day we will read from one to three chapters and through the entire Bible we will be looking for Jesus the Messiah.
I’ve tried year-long Bible reading plans before and have made it just a few weeks at best. Why? Becuase franky, I get bored reading some of the Old Testament. But, for two years we will read through the Bible with a focus and a purose - to find the Messiah.
Erica is joining me in this reading plan and study. We have read through several chapters already and guess what? I am reading with a new persepctive and purpose. So far, the beginings of Genesis have a new excitement for me.
I mentioned that Erica and I decided to do this together. Since we have been in Texas we have not had many opportunities to study the Bible together. In Minnesota, we attended Sunday school classes together at our church and did an occasional Bible study but since moving here we simply have not had something that we have done together. It is something we have both missed.
Reading through the Bible is a great way for us to do a study together. The content - finding the Messiah in the whole Bible - is a universal topic that we can both benefit from. Its not like we’re studying how to be a better mother or better husband. We’re looking for Jesus in the Bible.
So, as we reflect on the past twelve-plus months, we have both grown stronger in our faith in unique ways that are relevant to each of us. As we look forward to the next twelve and twenty four months we know that it is a season where we are to study the Bible together and learn from one another.
As individuals and as a married couple, we have asked Jesus to be the Lord of our lives - in charge of our lives. What better way to grow stronger into that then reading through His entire word and looking at the way He intended for us to live.
If you would like to join along, you can go to reviveschool.org and download the reading plan. If you would like access to the videos and daily lessons you can do that as well.
If you have decided to do this as an individual or a couple, would you please let us know? We would love to check in with you once in a while and see how its going.
What's your resolution?
Shawn
