One of my favorite things to know about people is what they enjoy reading. I admittedly spend the majority of my time reading children books to Nicole but in between reading about garbage trucks and dogs, I sometimes have time to squeeze a book or two in for myself. Here's what I made the time to read this summer.
Bringing up Bebe
After learning so much from reading French Kids Eat Everything I couldn't help but grab a copy of Bringing Up Bebe when I saw it nestled on a shelf at the library. While I didn't find the book as a whole to be anything earth shattering, I did learn a few insights into parenting strategies that are uniquely American. The French are significantly less child-centered than most Americans are, so even though not everything aligned with the goals and values of our household, I did stumble across a few valuable take-aways.
The Power of a Praying Wife
This book was recommended to me years ago by one of Shawn's good friends. I didn't know anything about the book when I got my own copy but I quickly discovered that it's a book of 31 prayers and related scriptures. I prayed my way through the book while Shawn was working very long days during the 50 day outreach of reviveTexas. I really appreciated having a tool that helped me pray for Shawn in new ways and about new things. It helped me feel united to him even though we weren't spending very much time together and I truly believe that it helped support him as he ministered to others.
The Lifegiving Home
I tried reading this book in two different formats because I was so captivated by the title. At the end of the day, I just didn't love it. I think the intention of the book was good but there were a lot of words used to share a simple message. My favorite part of the book was learning about the resources page that the authors created, which I am sure I will reference numerous times in the years to come. If you are interested wholesome things to listen to as a family, read aloud or need ideas for spending time as a family, check out their resource page here.
Magic for Marigold
One year for Christmas I asked for every L.M. Montgomery book that our local library didn't have. I had read all 8 of the original Anne of Green Gables books and enjoyed every minute I spent reading the Emily trilogy. Being the great gift giver that she is, my mom did track down many of the books I requested. While I was re-arranging some of the books in our house I realized that I still had a bookmark in my copy of Magic for Marigold and I had never finished reading it. There was no time like the present to revisit the story and finish it once and for all.
What have you been reading lately?
