Shelter at Home = Work from Home

I learn something new every day. Have you ever heard that? It's a great motto to live by and I think that if I were to do an assessment of all of my days, I would find that I actually did learn something each day, most days.

Today I learned many new things. Some were simple observations, others were a rock-my-world revelation. Well, maybe not so much but they were for sure interesting.

Let me give you a little context for my day. The year is 2020 and the month is March. Our kid's history books will talk about this season as the one where COVID-19 swept the world. They may never remember that we experienced a “Shelter in Place” order from our local government.

Okay, so here it is. Dallas County issued a Shelter in Place order that started earlier this week. Since our office is in Dallas County we had to turn the lights off and have everyone work from home. This includes me. For the record, we live in a different county - more on that in a moment.

So, the night before last Erica spent some significant time in our guest bedroom making space for me to use that as my office. Then, early this morning Nicole, Jonah and I went on an adventure exploring the garage for an IKEA desk that we had disassembled and stored. Actually, the desk was easy to find, it was the screws that go with it that we had to do a little searching for. We set up my desk, I said my goodbyes and I went into the guest room to work.

Apparently, this is going to be the standard at least until April 30th or until the city in which our office is located lifts the order.

So, after my first full day of working from home what did I learn?

Prayer Works. I know what it's like on the weekends when I’m home. The kids want to play and their number one request is that we do everything “as a family.” We had less than 24 hours to prepare so I asked a few people to join us in our prayer to allow our family to find the right balance of “work” vs “home” during this season. I am happy to report that our first day was amazing and everyone did so well. Are you praying for things like this in your life?

You can’t catch coronavirus over Zoom. I lived a life well-lived on Zoom today and expect the same for the coming weeks. We determined that even if you sneeze with your microphone on, there is no way to catch the coronavirus over zoom.

Counties are Copycats. I mentioned that we live in a different county from Dallas County, where the office is located. Dallas County was the first to issue the Shelter at Home order. The following day, the city where our office is located issued its own order with the only difference being the length of time it would last - about 27 days longer. We read the city order and it was verbatim what the county order said. Interestingly it had the same format too. Later in the day, the county in which we live also issued an order. Wouldn’t you know the language and the formatting were exactly the same as Dallas County too??!! I do a lot of writing in my role - maybe I should start using Copy and Paste more often.

Oak trees sprout from acorns if you add dirt, water, and sunshine. Duh. The window of my new home office looks out on our front lawn. We have a GIANT oak tree in the center of our lawn and every fall it produces millions, if not billions of acorns that fall to the ground. We spend countless hours raking them up in the fall. (Have you ever tried raking acorns? How about walking on them?) Well, we don’t get them all and some find their way into the dirt. Well acorns are seeds and when seeds get into the dirt, have a little water, and some sunshine they start to grow. It looked like we were starting an oak grove in our front yard - they all sprouted up at the same time. We easily had a couple hundred sprouts. Well, Erica and the kids took to that and started uprooting them and throwing them out. They did a great job getting to the roots. Later on, I tackled the rest from the topside with my walk-behind mower.

Well, I learned a few things on this first day of working from home. Maybe these things are a little silly - I hope they were. We really wanted to tell you in a fun way how we are navigating the current environment. We’re great! The weather is nice, we have food in our pantry, great attitudes and most importantly our hope is in Jesus and nothing else.

We would love to pray for you as you navigate this season so please feel free to send us your prayer requests. It would be an honor to pray.
